we are once a wanderer of our own, chasing what’s on our mind within our own thoughts, solves our worriedness in loneliness, seeking the power of melancholic writing or searching for romanticized-lyric, just to give some relieve in our heavy-unshared thinking.

then we bumped into someone, when suddenly this customs are, well it’s not really an obligation, but you know you need some adaptation.

adjusting, to share what’s on your mind, to let them wanders around your thought with you, to welcome them on your world.

and somehow, it wasn’t as hard as you predict it would be. there’s still some things you keep to yourself, which is fairly humane I think. but after all, those fences you thought no one else could break, is piece by piece flew by without you even noticing.

that’s one person you talking about.

what about others, that came along with it?

is your fence wide enough to welcome those? or do YOU have the willingness to open your fence for them? are you comfortable enough, to adjust your highly-privatized life and turn it into a complete opposite of it?

human relationship possessed a completely strange vibe. you could switch over to a different personality you have never know ever existed. you suddenly have power to give in your human nature, and give way for others characteristic to penetrate you. you NEVER wanted to change things in that particular person, that never bother you in the first place, they are still as perfect as you found them way back them. you LOVE how they found comfort on others, as much as you found it on your own. then you started to consider, are you  too “exclusive”, too picky, or just vibrate in a completely odd frequency compare to others? you tried to change yourself, thinking maybe the exact problem lies within you and your stupid fences.

but then the question next is, are you absolutely pleasant with it?

Refugee 101 (On a Stranger Point of View)

Refugees:
“A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it..”
(1951 Refugee Convention in Genève, article 1)

This particular word, Refugee(s), might sound so familiar for you, as every newspaper nowadays has marked them on their headlines several times of a month, or a week even.
Their photos spread everywhere, from children to older women, with different kind of skin colors and racial status, each struggled the worst condition in human race today: the loss of human rights.

In prior year, there are millions and millions of people flown from their own countries seeking for temporary shelter with reasons like religion clash, civil wars, poor economic condition and many other reasons.
The conditions of their country seems so dreadful, they even have guts to cross ocean with minimum preparation and terrible vessels, which delivers another sad news such as sinking vessels loaded with hundreds of poor condition of people, looking for asylum (terms scholars used to call shelter for refugees).
Some stories just irritable in a sense of “are you even human to even do that to another” kind of way, when another countries simply close their doors to these refugees, even after seeing their ripped clothes or tired face after such a long journey away from home.
Possible host countries are now openly rejecting the arrival of refugees in their countries, tightening their borders with tense stand-off police, making it impossible to find a new home, and stating clearly that they are opposed refugees in their land.

Not to mention there are people, migrant who only seek for “more”, are now utilize this chaotic situation to cross neighboring countries border with the intention only to migrate easier, which only causing more trouble and hardening the life of refugees.

Really, sometimes human are sooo brilliant, and smarter when they are in trouble, or in hard time.

And more we dig about this case; one crucial word seems to be the page-turner headlines.
Religion

In most case, dissimilarity in religion leads to inability to accept new people. Which is, good Lord, aren’t we already living in 21 century, where diversities celebrated and equality honored?

European and American are even shamefully build this “phobia” upon certain religion, continues to create riots voicing their refusal of these people.
Like, really?
Even worst, similarity in religion even, could not open the eyes of humanity.
Ethnic and religion cleansing, which is nonsense in every aspect of human conscience, are the reason of Rohingya became refugees in first place, but these reasons seems nothing to neighboring countries who claimed themselves “enormous” in number of people with same religion as what these refugees believes.
You should notice them, who has the same religion as you, as your family, am I right?
Is that the basic constitution of a religion?

Religion is NOT the reason to blame. Human did.
People fear of instability. People fear of strangers. People fear of insecurity. People fear that these poor people will turn wealthy, snatched their job opportunity, and won’t go back to their country, just like what the Turks now experienced in Germany.

Faster we run to liberality, faster we backed right where we started.
Or even further back.
What’s different now with isolated ghetto in Europe, or Berlin Walls, or the fear of Jewish community taken control of European economy back in 1930s?
Goodbye Schengen. Goodbye Union. Goodbye free trade. Goodbye solidarity

But refugee is not as simple as morality anymore.

It’s about ego combined with sense of security topped with greed.
Government, people nowadays call it.
Morality came in 100th place, they even discussed on “trading” refugees to 3rd party countries, when the host country could not or would not accept them.
Did you see the “shelter” or can we say remote island Australian has built to cage the unwanted refugee?
Dreadful, when you imagine kids locked up in a tiny island.
Not to mention how shelters are now privatized by their government and people are making business out of it.

Hell.
Refugees are people; they are not products to be packaged at the lowest price and sold to the highest bidders, guys.

Somehow, when I read those articles, this tiny part of my heart felt, sadly, relieved.
Relieved that I don’t have this necessity to ‘choose’ to whom I’ve belonged to.
Relieved that I always been welcome to this country I called home.
Relieved that I could educate myself, praise whatever whoever wherever I want, deliver opinion and express myself in every possible way I could think of.

(Anyway, I read one article that could sooth my heart. It’s about religion as part of solution, where thousands of people out there already believe it as driving force behind wars.
Religious leader should gathered up and conduct interfaith discussion more often so that they could acts as a peacemaker and reconciler, as the voice of conscience, to make sure that Religion is here in this world to unite, not divide humanity)

Year-End

I wish:

1. This childish part of me would be disappeared, not instantly but day by day. Stop being an ignorant brat; do everything much faster than I was before; most importantly to be able to think about others first than mine.
2. I could sectioned my head to dozens counterparts that work individually, so that I could think million different things at the same time.
3. I have nerves to do, to speak, to act as what my head asked me to do.
4. My head could operate rationally once in a while. Especially when Life doesn’t need your heart to take part on making decision.
5. I could be the reason for someone’s happiness, the source of somebody’s laugh, the one that relieve pains. It doesn’t need to be major, small things do have impact even just tiny little bit.

I’m good at making lists.
Terrible at turning it to reality.

Children of Men

Have been experiencing an euphoria over an accomplished project and seeing couples of children running through small yards, this movie is all I could remember about.
I have watch this movie about 7 years ago.

This is not a typical hollywood movie, with beautiful love story, mesmerising views, or top-rated actors. I don’t think they even ever hit box office chart. This movie’s quite dark, no love story whatsoever, and to top it all, they twists the most unfavourable topics that year to encounter from the first second the movie rolls: End of the world, with reality so close to what people outside television lens living under their feet. But until now, i still could recall almost every scene that this movie displayed.

Basically, Children of Men told about when 3 pillars of human being are collapsed and the tip of the road is within eyesight. When human development, economic growth and environmental sustainability are perished, and you saw it crumble piece to piece every second of your life, don’t you want the world to just stop right this moment?

When infertility could be spared no more, soil could give you not even piece of nutrients, and people with no job, no sole aim of living, only survival with guns take over their life to create power over people, is it right to call the human race are close enough to extinction?

Well, this is not actually the topic i was going to write about. Too long for introduction.

I was going to write about a nowadays movement, which i remember i’ve talked about with 2 of my travel mates on top of a moving boat out of nowhere, that i think is constructive enough to prove ourselves that we, without doubt are still the Children of Men.

The movement is about constructing chosen village to be a model village, with true purpose not only to develop, but to make it sustain.
To integrate economic, social and environmental issues in all societal spheres and levels on short and long term basis is, lets be honest, the hardest part of this movement. I knew one in my university, in couple of different university social projects, Bayer, Unilever and other companies that might had not get wider spread as these companies did.

So can’t we dream a little dream today, for the sake of one Sunday afternoon, being spent in a totally different environment that made me think beyond what i’m usually and capable of doing?

What if, what IF, every single non profit organisations, education institutions, and corporations, have true calling (and courage) to take a bullet and choose one village, then construct a sustainable model village?

What if, every model village developers have perspective to build an independent society, not only to conduct reconstruction of infrastructures and environmental values, but also education, entrepreneurship character building and health programs, in order to enhance opportunity of sustainable living in society involved?

What if, these model village programs, eventually drive successfully and could actually foster the sustainability of human being itself?

Sustainable village in my opinion, could actually achieve a decrease in poverty by enhancing the economic growth of the village.
You can do it by providing a cash transfer, or you can encourage people to explore and develop people’s skill in hope that they can make their own business to trigger the economic growth.
Or, you can decrease health issues, by ensuring nutrition and prevent diseases, making sure that every infants, babies and future generations have a proper living.
There’s a lot of aspect you can change, from economic view, health issues, environmental sustainability, education and so on, when you have the power to actually, brought change to a handful of people, and alter a generation.

It’s a beautiful thing, you see, when people with power and money, could pick one societies to convert, and works it Pay-It-Forwardly (this word not even exist) so one by one, the entire degrading societies and living spaces are flourishing AND infecting other villages after they are capable on walking by themselves. When you see other beings changed to a better one, when you can see natural resources and place we are living in secured and harvested, when nothing but good things are outspread within your gaze, will people be ready for heaven since they’re already living in one?

Of course, there’s no such thing as perfect idea. There’s always obstacles behind our way. Barriers over political stability around area we’re developing, stability over developers dedication towards program, and even characteristics of the community will eventually take trolls on how much our programs could actually working.

How could you create changes, when the mindset of the society are likely to perceived a model village as an income effect or even charity, or they don’t even have interest in what you’re doing, hence the sense of ownership over aspects that being developed in the village are absent? Sustainable model village is a complex sustainable development project due to its interrelated development in human’s life pillars, which means that model village could not be forced to certain societies if those societies itself did not show any participation or being hard to cooperate.

That is why i do think that to make this programs work, the most important thing is public participation. Village community and development agents should stand on equal terms, which means development agents act ONLY as facilitators and introducing technical know-how and other needed resources to community, while community itself who takes the lead role in decision-making and implementation of development activities. They will eventually use their local resources and popped every single problems that arose in their daily life and this is excellent, since they are the one who will continue this program on in the future.

All this programs need is this one primal word: dedication.

Dedication from developers to actually stand as equal until there is no social level diversification with targeted society, dedication from developers to build public awareness towards issues they brought up and involving societies in decision making, dedication to NEVER stop, until community could actually stand still on their own.

Bringing changes towards people while also preserved their cultural values and tradition are tricky. I realise from the beginning of my pencil wrote this as my ultimate bucket-list, since to achieve the core value of this movement is close to impossibility from case to case i’ve read.

But don’t you think it will be worth trying for (not only once) in your life?

Gie?

I’ve just recently read one book that, according to a LOT of sites, is one of the essential book you need to read as Indonesian, especially youngster, who wanted to know further about Indonesian in early ages of its democratic era.

Note that I’ve never have a chance to watch the popular movie “Gie” that people had been raving about. So this is my very first encounter of the infamous Soe Hok Gie, the Chinese-heritage Indonesian who lead the student rebellion in 1960’s, a couple of years after Indonesia celebrated their independence from long period of colonialism.

First thing first, let me say that I do NOT adore Gie like everybody else do, nor do I think He’s a good leader.

But I think He’s quite a fascinating character since the beginning. I do adore how he reads TONS of books, watch different kind of movies, which I think built his character a LOT.

His biggest weakness, in my opinion, is how perfectionist he look upon things. How he look on people, how smallest mistake people did really bother him so much, he started hating lots of people.

I do understand how society thought about him as a communist, when Gie has bragged on and on about his resentment to dictatorship, or people who rule and stand out, while whole people in his nation are undernourished and impoverished.

He wanted the “perfect” world, which are: a) all distributed equally and ethnicity solidarity is prioritized, b) no one rules, or if there’s one, he should be flawless (close to God-perfection, I think), and c) people’s voice are heard continuously.

Some of his visions are socialists to the core and I don’t think that’s completely irrational or wrong, either.

I just think that’s too much to ask, specially for country whose foundation is still unstable, affected by too many thoughts but wanted to establish their own ideology.

His critics over people who rule or even have power over him, sometimes frustrated me enough to read.

But Gie, as other human did, also have sweet spots in his tough heart.

I remember in his book, one of last days of his life, he started to feel tingle in his heart while seeing a lot of people along Jakarta’s slum suffer from scarcity, whether from money, place to live, food, or even friends to tag along with. He felt suddenly “heroic”, like he wanted to jump and help this people out, while in his brain he’s calculating whether it was wise and possible enough to bring changes to this world.

That’s a rare condition from person like Gie, who rarely brought his conscience while looking through society. How melancholic Gie that day, made him a “person”, not just walking Casanova with his structured words and broad thoughtful assessment.

Other thing I like about Gie, is how rational He was toward people judgement about him.

I remember, one of the best paragraph he ever written in my opinion, is this (in Bahasa)

This passage he wrote after 3 rejections from his “lover” with the same single reason.

No family wanted a rebel intruder in their family.

Boys, especially in his unstable age, would be angry all over the place after hearing rejection from family, who don’t even know, or even wanted to know him personally.

But Gie is rational enough, to consider a mother’s heart, instead of only young love that plays mind tricks in both him and his girls.

Although Gie doesn’t believe in things called Love, he did indeed, believe that mother’s love is existed, and beyond everything else, he respected that.

One thing that I do pity him, though, aside from his bad luck of dying so young, is how lonely I felt his whole existence.

Is that because he doesn’t believe there’s higher power above Human power, who always always look after us from Above?

Is that because he always relies on his own, because he couldn’t even afford being dependable to others?

Homeland Pride

One of my lifetime project, and one of the most important one, before I turn 25 is this: to know my country better and further.

I’ve sense, since 5/6 years ago, that I’ve been totally westernized.

Okay, i made that words up, but what I meant is that I’ve been developing this habit of mine of thinking that everything about western civilization is great. I’ve been addicted with, from things as simple as movies, songs, to heavier things as books, people to look up to, and so on.

I’ve been worshipping them way way too much, and way waaaay too long. I’ve been neglecting the urge to know my country better, if you met me and have real conversation with me, you’ll grab the drift that I, shamelessly, have no idea where I’ve been standing this moment.

I have no sort of clue whatsoever about Its history, I have zero respect on people who civilized around (specially those who rules, those who dictated and those who follows), and I have no recollection on being proud of my education in Indonesia, even geographically, you can say I have the knowledge of a fifth grader.

I can say that I’ve been digging a little deeper unto European/World history and gather a lot more information about it more than I knew the historical detail of my own country.
I can popped answers about capital city of dozens of countries around the globe but have no idea of where certain city lies on the map, or things as silly as what traditional beverages are famous of from my country.

How could you name those places your home, when your heart doesn’t tingle when little things brought back your childhood conception?
How could you call those places your homeland, when your memory doesn’t linger in certain corner, when your skins just shiver when you recalled cheesy things you’ve done there?
Home is the people behind your thought, places where your destination headed, your entire lifetime journey to be the best version of you.
When this thought stroke me, I felt extremely embarrassed for the lack of knowledge I gathered from place I grew up, people who gave me chances for chasing my dreams, and nation where I found beauty in humblest thing.

Never have I been so proud of myself, until I discover these two things: My Faith and My Heritage.

So these 3 years ahead I have above me, I have mended myself to invest small part of my time in some sort of discovery project:
1. Read; People who have the courage to lead, Man who had a vision of a better future, Those who’ve created culture you’re living right now, whether it was towards an ideal nations or worst.
2. Explore; Places you’ve never been before, Spots people neglected, Paths that will remind you of how amazing your homeland is.
3. Build; New perspective on your country, Sense of pride of being Indonesian, and Strong passion to learn more about the land you’ve stood in.

Dan mungkin, mencoba menulis dalam Bahasa Indonesia dalam frekuensi yang lebih tinggi, serta dalam ejaan yang lebih baik dan benar?

That’s a tough one, though 😦

Doa Untuk Abang

People said, words came out of your mouth is a simple form of pray;
People said, things we have in our mind regarding those people around us, are simply an unspoken prayer;
I believe that God heard every single thing, from prayers we screamed out of our lungs, to those little whispers we said in the middle of our loneliness, or at night when no one could hear you
Well, I decided to take chance to write this post for my one and only older brother i have 🙂

Untuk Abangku tersayang,
Abang terbaik, terpinter, terganteng yang pernah ada di hidup gue,
Abang terbawel, tercemburuan, tersupel yang paling ngangenin
All i ever dreamed of for my future-husband to look like,

Now you live on your own, for the first time of your life, so distance from your usual life in those easy life you have before. It took times, maybe not as instant as you wanted to be, to get used to live this way. I know it’s hard, as i know how your huge social circle is in this big city we called home. I know how you LOVE urban life, and how you hate places with no network connection, now all i can hear now is you yelling, calling names of those provider who gave you crappy internet connection when you need to send something to your friends. I’m laughing hysterically as i write this…

But i also know how easy you socialize with someone new. How people love being around you, hearing tons of your jokes as well as feeling secure with your protective side of you. I know how you can stay out late till morning with dozens of friends with completely opposite personality, and you do it as easy as flipping back hands, while i found it hard to accomplish, let alone to make them as long-time best friend for life. I know how smart you are buried behind those bad-boy look you have.

You are the one who shows me that people can actually grow. You no longer that young boy who stay up late out of nowhere, making Moms and Dads worried as hell, calculated every single horrible probability about where or what you’re doing those time. Now you turned into this responsible man, always calm me down when i have this annoying nerve that comes out of nowhere, spreading anger and hates everywhere, when back in the days, I used to be the one who calmed you down.

Here’s a little pray for you:

May God give you strength, to take chances and decision on your life, and believe in it.
May God open your mind to always dreams, and have faith in the power within you
May He bless you with warm smiles everyday, so that you always, always believe that life is not as crappy as you might think it is
May He strengthen your feet, on your path to achieve every dreams you mind, and tighten His hand on yours while you shaken up when things gone rough
May distance won’t ever made you weak, instead open your eyes to separate those who stays, and those who don’t
May each day, people fond of you and your charms, and find the true kindness I see in your eyes every single day since the day we were destined to be siblings 🙂

Have tons and TONS of lucks, Bang Andrew!
Go run, and achieve those dreams flew around your head ❤ ❤
I love you my annoying brother so much, damn sometimes it hurts!
